After a successful carnival last year, Northgate were keen to take part again this year but not on their own. Now, as part of Unity Education Trust, it would see Northgate join forces with Dereham Sixth Form, Beeston Primary, Garvestone Primary, King’s Park Infant and Grove House Infant and Nursery.
Each of the schools took part in a competition to design a ‘mascot’ with the winning designs being made into bigger than life-size foam characters. The theme of the float for the parade was ‘unity’ and it saw pupils and staff from all of the different schools come together to take part. Unity’s float really was awash with colour and hundreds of helium balloons which were popular with children on the parade route. Northgate’s dancers also had lots of practice in the run up to the parade, dancing to ‘We are Family’ along the route. A lot of hard work had gone into the float by the Design Department and other staff offering their time. There really was a great community feel at the carnival and despite the weather, thousands of people turned out for the parade, waving a cheering. Unity pupils proudly walked alongside the truck with our banner and the mascots, along with balloons and bubbles.
The fun continued at the rec after the parade with Unity hosting lots of different stalls for the Dereham Community including a raffle, nail bar, target golf, book stall, teddy tombola, reading café, cake stall and more. Thanks to everyone, pupils, parents and staff who got involved or contributed in some way!
